Airports try to attract asian carriers

Several US East Coast airports such as Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth are trying to lure Asian carriers by claiming to be gateways for the Latin America market, but Miami airport is ahead of the game.

On July 14, a Boeing 747-400F in the colours of Korean Air touched down at Miami International Airport, marking the latest expansion of the world's largest international air cargo carrier in the US. The US market, however, was not the chief target of KAL's move. The airline kicked off service to Miami to get better access to the growing markets of Latin America.

"In the past, most of the cargo heading for Miami or Central and South America was transported by air to New York, Chicago and Atlanta and then trucked or carried by other airlines to final destinations, but the non-stop flight to Miami greatly reduces transit time," a spokesperson for KAL Cargo declared.

FAPAA meetings discuss e-freight and security

Director of IATA Cargo Services for Asia-Pacific Peter Chong gave a presentation on the e-freight pilot program that involves the UK, Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. He then outlined the second stage of the project, which will involve more FAPAA member countries. E-freight is a project to eliminate paper processes from air cargo forwarding in much the same way that e-ticketing works for passenger travel. The initial focus is on transportation documentation. It will move into commercial and regulatory documentation in the next phase.

Delegates also were informed that FAPAA has been awarded a seat on a global IATA / FIATA Air Cargo Security Industry Forum (ACSIF) and will work with other associations from around the world to create a standardised program for air cargo security. A spokesperson for FAPAA said one of its key challenges was to assist countries that have no air cargo security systems in place. ACSIF believes that in future, new systems should be modelled on other programs deemed ‘best practice’ operating elsewhere in the world.
