Featured State: Alaska : a brisk air cargo industry...

Alaska Airlines, Northern Air Cargo and Era Aviation added aircraft to expand and make their services more economical. Peninsula Airways moved into a new hangar and Northwest Airlines Cargo took a lease on the old Reeve Hangar to start a maintenance facility at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

Era Aviation successfully emerged from bankruptcy and took delivery of two Beechcraft 1900 19-passenger turbo-prop aircraft to replace its 45-year-old DeHavilland Twin Otter fleet.

In October the U.S. Postal Service announced a plan to further change the way it gets mail to Bush Alaska by moving rural hub airports to 14 smaller villages in an effort to save money in its bypass mail system. This came after a change to truck mail up the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay, instead of flying it from Fairbanks.

ABX and DHL duke it out in court

From the Columbus Business First:

ABX Air Inc. has told shareholders it considers its largest customer, DHL, in default under terms of two agreements between the companies. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday, the Wilmington-based air freight carrier said DHL has withheld certain reimbursement payments under the companies' business accords.

DHL has claimed certain ABX expenses are no longer eligible for full reimbursement because its revenue from other customers has exceeded a 10 percent threshold of the carrier's total sales. The company also said the agreement doesn't cover ABX's costs in maintaining its public company status and fees incurred from its buyout talks with Astar Air Cargo Holdings LLC this summer.

ABX Air (NASDAQ:ABXA) in July rejected a $450 million buyout bid from the Miami-based freight carrier, calling its $7.75-a-share purchase proposal too low.

Responding to the 10 percent threshold allegation, ABX said the company excluded items from its calculations that would result in the 10 percent figure not having been reached. It also said DHL's refusal to pay the amounts might push ABX into default on some of its credit agreements.

ABX said it's considering pursuing a dispute resolution initiative, negotiating with DHL to settle the quarrel or other options that it did not specify.

Privately held DHL operates in more than 225 countries and territories, with 19 shipping centers and more than 1,300 employees in Ohio.

ABX Air runs 15 U.S. hubs and a fleet of 112 airplanes. The company recorded a $90.1 million in profit on $1.26 billion in revenue in 2006.

Airports try to attract asian carriers

Several US East Coast airports such as Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth are trying to lure Asian carriers by claiming to be gateways for the Latin America market, but Miami airport is ahead of the game.

On July 14, a Boeing 747-400F in the colours of Korean Air touched down at Miami International Airport, marking the latest expansion of the world's largest international air cargo carrier in the US. The US market, however, was not the chief target of KAL's move. The airline kicked off service to Miami to get better access to the growing markets of Latin America.

"In the past, most of the cargo heading for Miami or Central and South America was transported by air to New York, Chicago and Atlanta and then trucked or carried by other airlines to final destinations, but the non-stop flight to Miami greatly reduces transit time," a spokesperson for KAL Cargo declared.

FAPAA meetings discuss e-freight and security

Director of IATA Cargo Services for Asia-Pacific Peter Chong gave a presentation on the e-freight pilot program that involves the UK, Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. He then outlined the second stage of the project, which will involve more FAPAA member countries. E-freight is a project to eliminate paper processes from air cargo forwarding in much the same way that e-ticketing works for passenger travel. The initial focus is on transportation documentation. It will move into commercial and regulatory documentation in the next phase.

Delegates also were informed that FAPAA has been awarded a seat on a global IATA / FIATA Air Cargo Security Industry Forum (ACSIF) and will work with other associations from around the world to create a standardised program for air cargo security. A spokesperson for FAPAA said one of its key challenges was to assist countries that have no air cargo security systems in place. ACSIF believes that in future, new systems should be modelled on other programs deemed ‘best practice’ operating elsewhere in the world.
